How to compare custom jewelry quotes
Two quotes can describe similar-looking jewelry while covering different stones, construction or services. Make the assumptions explicit before comparing the totals.
Keep the design and scope consistent
Prepare a concept with the free 3D jewelry design tool, then bring its proposal PDF to each conversation. Confirm whether the quote is for one ring, a full earring pair, or a pendant with or without a chain.
Record which details are preferences and which have been confirmed: ring size, stone outline, band width, finish, engraving, accents and any construction changes the maker recommends.
Compare the actual materials
Ask for the stone material, natural or lab-grown origin, treatments, dimensions and relevant report. For precious metal, confirm alloy, purity and estimated finished weight. A preview color and a generic stone-size label are not enough for a price comparison.
The metal guide and shape guide can help you prepare more specific questions.
Separate the work and extras
Check design/CAD, revisions, fabrication, stone setting, finishing, sizing, tax, shipping and aftercare. If the mounting price already includes these, do not add them again in the budget worksheet. Supplied stones may still incur inspection and setting charges.
Ask about the payment schedule, lead time, changes after approval and the seller's applicable return or custom-order terms. Keep the answer with the quote rather than relying on a general promise.
Choose the route that fits the project
A local maker found by ZIP may be appropriate for bespoke work, while a current retailer configuration may suit another design. Compare online and local jewelers and review the store visit checklist before deciding.
A purchase quote is not the same as insurance replacement or resale value. The appraisal guide explains that distinction.
